Governor Stein took decisive action today by signing into law four significant bills aimed at addressing various state issues. Law enforcement, human trafficking, tax relief, and financial protection for seniors are the focal points of these newly enacted laws.
House Bill 481: Enhancing Law Enforcement Resources
Governor Stein emphasized the importance of House Bill 481, which aims to mitigate law enforcement vacancies affecting public safety. He stated, “This bill builds on House Bill 50’s progress to support law enforcement officers returning to work from retirement. Vacancies in law enforcement agencies have a real impact on public safety, and this benefit incentivizes experienced law enforcement officers to come back and serve their communities. I appreciate the legislature’s partnership in supporting law enforcement and keeping people safe.”
House Bill 83: Combatting Human Trafficking
House Bill 83 was also signed into law, with Governor Stein highlighting its role in enhancing the state’s ability to combat human trafficking and protect minors from obscene content. “This bill strengthens the state’s response to human trafficking and better protects minors from obscene materials,” he remarked.
Senate Bill 595: Tax Relief and Senior Protection
Another crucial piece of legislation, Senate Bill 595, aligns North Carolina’s tax laws with IRS adjustments, offers tax relief to those affected by Hurricane Helene, and safeguards seniors against financial scams. Governor Stein noted, “Giving bank tellers the ability to refuse suspicious transactions and notify trusted contacts will better protect people from scams and fraud. One provision could hamper the state’s innovation economy, and I urge the General Assembly to revisit this issue in future legislation.”
House Bill 376
In addition to these bills, House Bill 376 was also signed into law by Governor Stein, further demonstrating the administration’s commitment to addressing the state’s legislative priorities.
