Commissioner Urges Safety for NC Residents During July Fourth Celebrations

Ensuring a Safe Fourth of July: Essential Tips for Grilling and Fireworks

As the United States marks its 250th Independence Day, North Carolinians are urged to focus on safety during the festivities. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey emphasizes the importance of preventing accidents while celebrating this historic occasion.

Commissioner Causey stated, “We want to make sure this Independence Day holiday is a happy one and free from tragedy.” He highlights the significance of reviewing fundamental safety practices before engaging with fireworks or grills to safeguard loved ones.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), fireworks-related incidents accounted for approximately 13,000 emergency room visits and 15 deaths across the country last year. Young adults and teens, specifically those aged 15 to 24, are identified as the most susceptible to these dangers.

Key Safety Recommendations

Commissioner Causey offers several safety tips to help keep families and properties secure:

  • Keep children away from lighting fireworks, including sparklers.
  • Be aware of local laws and confirm your fireworks are legal before use.
  • Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby.
  • Light one firework at a time and back up to a safe distance quickly.
  • Dump water on malfunctioning or unexploded fireworks; do not attempt to pick up or relight them.
  • Position your grill strictly outdoors and maintain a minimum three-foot clearance from any of your home’s structures.
  • Open the lid of a gas grill before igniting and never leave an active grill unattended.
