Residents of Maricopa County are being alerted to a potential health risk as the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has issued an Ozone High Pollution Advisory for July 1 and July 2, 2026. This advisory follows predictions that ozone levels will surpass the federal health standards during these days.
Ozone pollution occurs when vehicle emissions and industrial processes interact with sunlight, predominantly in warmer months like spring and summer. This ground-level ozone poses health risks, especially for children, the elderly, and individuals with existing respiratory conditions.
The public is advised to reduce outdoor activities, particularly vulnerable groups such as children and older adults with asthma. To help mitigate pollution, ADEQ and the Maricopa County Air Quality Department recommend several actions:
- Consider telecommuting to minimize vehicular traffic.
- Utilize carpooling or public transit when possible.
- Avoid extended idling in drive-thru lines by parking and going inside.
- Opt for biking or walking for short commutes.
- Use a broom instead of a leaf blower.
- Refuel vehicles during cooler evening hours to lessen evaporation.
- Choose low-VOC or water-based products for painting tasks.
- Seal containers of household chemicals to prevent vapor release.
- Learn more about air quality measures at Maricopa.gov/AQ.
Additional restrictions during the advisory include:
- A ban on wood burning in residential areas, including those with burn permits.
- Prohibition of leaf blower use by government employees and contractors.
- Avoidance of off-road vehicle activities.
