Ty Schmit’s journey from a sales position to a vibrant career in media is a testament to the power of seizing unexpected opportunities. After completing his education, Schmit returned to his hometown and took a sales job while contemplating his future. A tweet from McAfee’s newly launched media company in Indianapolis caught his attention, inviting video applications for internships. Schmit, along with 1,500 other hopefuls, decided to take a shot.
“I thought there was no way that I was going to get this opportunity, but I got lucky and they liked my video,” Schmit recalls. “They invited around 70 people to interview in Indianapolis. As soon as I got that email, I quit my job. I put all the chips in the center of the table.”
Ultimately, Schmit was one of 20 individuals selected for an internship that summer, and among just seven who later secured a full-time position. “There were a lot of college kids—I was the oldest by far—and they were looking for an experience to add to their résumés, but I was looking for a full-time job, and that might have given me a leg up,” he explains.
Initially focused on writing and blogging for the show, Schmit’s dedication and talent soon led to an opportunity to become a producer, allowing him to engage directly with the audience on the mic.
In 2020, McAfee expressed his appreciation through a tweet, saying, “I’m so incredibly grateful for the gift that is Ty Schmit from Waterloo, Iowa. Your work ethic somehow trumps your hilarity. I appreciate you, brother. Tell Mad Mel, Lou Holtz, Good Ol’ Billy, and the many other hysterical characters you’ve brought to life I said thanks as well.”
The show, with over 900 episodes, stands out in the realm of sports talk shows, according to Schmit, offering unique content that sets it apart from traditional offerings.
