Drake University Enhances Undergrad Research with New DUSCI Director

This fall, science students at Drake University are poised for new opportunities in research and industry collaboration, thanks to significant developments within the university’s science community.

Drake University has appointed Chris Kliethermes, Ph.D., as the new director of the Drake Undergraduate Science Collaborative Institute (DUSCI). Kliethermes, who also serves as an associate professor and chair of the Department of Psychology & Neuroscience, brings a wealth of experience in interdisciplinary research. His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science in psychology and biology from Lincoln University and a doctorate in behavioral neuroscience from Oregon Health & Science University.

In his new role, Kliethermes will direct several of DUSCI’s major initiatives, primarily focusing on the annual Drake University Conference on Undergraduate Research in the Sciences (DUCURS). This event highlights student research across a range of STEM and health disciplines, with a spotlight on innovative fields like artificial intelligence, neuroscience, pharmaceutical sciences, environmental sustainability, and K–12 science education.

The vision under Kliethermes’ leadership is to broaden collaborative efforts, enhance student connections with industry experts, and elevate Drake University’s status as a leading institution for undergraduate research.

“Undergraduate research is at the heart of what makes a Drake education special,” said Kliethermes. “I’m eager to build on DUSCI’s strong momentum by helping to strengthen our summer research program, expand our colloquium series, and showcase our students’ breakthrough work at our annual conference.”
