University of Arizona Celebrates Milestone for New Medical Innovations Building

The Phoenix Bioscience Core is set to house a new hub for medical research as the University of Arizona marks a significant milestone with the completion of the Medical Innovations Building’s structural framework. This milestone was celebrated with the presence of prominent figures including Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego and members of the Arizona Board of Regents, highlighting the project’s importance to the advancement of healthcare research in the region.

Advancing Healthcare in Arizona

Situated in downtown Phoenix, this seven-story, 200,000 square-foot facility aims to support a broad spectrum of medical research efforts, with its official opening anticipated in October 2027. University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella emphasized the building’s role in extending the university’s research capabilities and mission, providing a space for top-tier researchers to develop health solutions that will benefit the entire state. “The Medical Innovations Building is a home for research that shapes the future,” Garimella remarked, highlighting the collaborative potential with industry and healthcare partners.

Banner Health, a key partner in this venture, will occupy the top two floors of the building to establish a bio-incubator designed to expedite the translation of scientific discoveries into patient care. This collaboration reflects more than a decade of partnership between the U of A and Banner Health, which has already yielded over $59 billion in economic impact across Arizona since 2015, according to a recent report.

Collaborative Research and Innovation

The new facility will also house the U of A Center for Advanced Molecular and Immunological Therapies, which focuses on innovative treatments for cancers, infectious diseases, and autoimmune disorders. Researchers here are exploring promising areas like regenerative medicine for Type 1 diabetes and mRNA therapies for cancer. Additionally, the University of Arizona Cancer Center and the Department of Interdisciplinary Oncology from the College of Medicine – Phoenix will operate research labs within the building.

Transforming Downtown Phoenix

The Medical Innovations Building enhances the Phoenix Bioscience Core, a 30-acre district dedicated to scientific exploration. Mayor Kate Gallego highlighted the building’s contribution to Phoenix’s evolution as a center for healthcare and biotechnology, saying, “The Medical Innovations Building strengthens Phoenix’s growing reputation as a hub for healthcare, biotechnology, and research.”

This project, developed with partners McCarthy Building Companies and SmithGroup, started construction in October 2024. As noted by Stephanie Mitrovic from SmithGroup, “The topping out of the Medical Innovations Building marks an important milestone for everyone who helped bring this vision to life, reflecting the power of collaboration among the university, researchers, designers, builders and community partners working toward a common goal.”

Kurt Nyberg of McCarthy expressed pride in the shared vision that led to this achievement, stating, “Seeing the final beam raised atop the Medical Innovations Building is a proud moment for our entire team. This milestone reflects the craftsmanship and shared vision that define this design-build partnership.”
