Library Users to Experience Temporary Disruption in Online Catalog Services
Starting October 23, 2026, the Free Library of Philadelphia will conduct scheduled preventive maintenance on its online catalog, rendering it temporarily inaccessible. This maintenance is expected to last approximately one week, aimed at enhancing the system’s security and reliability.
Impact Limited to Online Catalog: Physical book borrowing and other library services will continue as usual. Patrons can still access eBooks and audiobooks via the Overdrive website and Libby App.
The decision for maintenance follows reports of PHP vulnerabilities, a programming language integral to the online catalog’s operations. Although no security breaches have been reported, this measure aligns with the City of Philadelphia’s standards to safeguard user information.
Other Services Available During Maintenance
- In-Person Borrowing: Library visitors can continue to borrow books and materials directly from library branches.
- Digital Reading: Access to Libby/OverDrive for eBooks and audiobooks remains uninterrupted.
- Online Learning: Resources such as LinkedIn Learning and Mango Languages continue to be accessible.
- Library Information: Find hours and locations of library branches online.
- Free News Access: Members can access the Inquirer, New York Times, and more without paywalls.
- Community Engagement: Stay informed through library blogs and explore the events calendar.
- Historical Archives: Dive into digital collections featuring historic photos, prints, and maps.
While the online catalog registration is temporarily down, it is anticipated to be operational before the catalog itself resumes. We aim to minimize inconvenience and appreciate the community’s understanding and patience during this period.
Updates regarding the maintenance progress and any changes to the timeline will be communicated promptly to ensure users are well-informed.
