As the Fourth of July approaches, Flint’s city officials urge citizens to celebrate with caution, adhering to local fireworks regulations to ensure the safety of neighborhoods, families, pets, and emergency services.
Residents in Flint can legally use consumer fireworks from June 29 through July 4, during the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 p.m.
Fireworks use is restricted to private property, requiring the owner’s consent. They are not allowed on public areas such as streets, sidewalks, parks, schools, churches, or any other public space. Furthermore, using fireworks between midnight and 8:00 a.m. is strictly forbidden.
Flouting the fireworks ordinance may lead to penalties reaching $500 and confiscation of the fireworks. The City also advises residents to take precautionary measures for a safe celebration:
- Have a bucket of water or a garden hose ready.
- Prevent young children from handling fireworks.
- Keep pets indoors to protect them during fireworks displays.
- Ensure proper disposal of fireworks and clean up debris after use.
- Be mindful of neighbors, veterans, older adults, and those with sensory sensitivities.
“Independence Day is a time for our community to come together and celebrate,” said Mayor Sheldon A. Neeley. “We encourage everyone to enjoy the holiday responsibly by following the law, respecting their neighbors and making safety a priority. Working together helps ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July.”
The City advises residents to report any unauthorized fireworks activities through suitable non-emergency channels, while emergencies should be reported via 911.
