Flint residents urged to update settlement claims before October deadlines

As the deadline approaches, residents of Flint are being reminded to verify their eligibility for payments from the Flint Water Crisis settlement. Ensuring that all necessary information is submitted to the Claims Administrator is crucial for receiving these payments.

Claimants have received notices indicating that additional details are needed to finalize their approved claims. Two key deadlines are approaching for these submissions.

Upcoming Deadlines for Claimants

For claimants with legal representation: They have until October 8, 2026, to provide the following, if required:

  • Social Security number;
  • Signed release and attestation form;
  • Current driver’s license or another recent government-issued ID.

For claimants without legal representation: The deadline is extended to October 17, 2026, to accommodate mailing delays.

Claimants are advised to adhere to the deadline specified in their individual notice from the Claims Administrator, as some may have different deadlines based on their claim’s circumstances.

Special Notice for Former Minors

The City of Flint is particularly urging those who were minors when their claims were filed to ensure that all necessary information has been submitted on their behalf.

Claims may have been filed by various parties on behalf of minors, such as attorneys, parents, or guardians. It’s important for these individuals to confirm with the person who filed their claim whether all required information has been submitted to the Claims Administrator.

Additionally, residents should check past addresses and mail for any correspondence from the Claims Administrator or Special Master Deborah Greenspan, especially if they have moved since filing their claim.

Mayor Sheldon Neeley advises, “I strongly encourage every Flint resident who believes they may have a settlement claim to take a few minutes and make sure their information is up to date. If you were a minor when your claim was filed, reach out to the family member, attorney or other person who handled your claim. Check your old address and your mail for a letter from the Claims Administrator or Special Master. Do not assume that everything has been completed simply because a claim was filed years ago. Take the time now to make sure you have done what is required to receive the payment you may be entitled to.”

Meeting the requirements for an approved claim is essential for receiving a payment. Residents should not assume that no further action is needed just because a claim was previously filed or approved.

The City suggests the following actions for residents:

  1. Check mail and records for letters from the Water Settlement Administrator or Epiq, the payment distribution administrator.
  2. Contact their attorney if they have one.
  3. Reach out to the family member, parent, guardian, or other person who might have filed the claim on their behalf, especially if they were a minor at the time.
  4. Ensure the Claims Administrator has all required information and that any necessary forms or documentation are completed before the applicable deadline.

The City of Flint is not involved in determining settlement amounts, approving claims, or distributing payments. The settlement agreement, supervised by the U.S. District Court, outlines the payment formula.

Residents are encouraged to act promptly and not wait until the deadline to address any outstanding information.
