Brenda Hillman: A Celebrated Poet in Contention for the National Book Award
Esteemed poet Brenda Hillman, recognized for her innovative approach to poetry, is among the finalists for the 2026 National Book Award. Hillman, who completed her MFA at the acclaimed Iowa Writers’ Workshop in 1976, has made significant contributions to the literary world, particularly in the realm of poetry.
Currently a professor emerita at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California, Hillman is being nominated for her work in the poetry category with her book Still House in the Desert: An Eco-Contemplation. This collection, published by Wesleyan University Press, delves into themes of time, space, and the essence of objects within domestic spaces.
Hillman’s influence extends beyond her written work. As noted by Lan Samantha Chang, director of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, “For decades, Brenda Hillman has sharpened her brilliance on the blinding edge of poetic invention. During her many semesters as a member of Iowa’s distinguished visiting faculty, she has also been a beloved mentor and teacher to a generation of poets.”
In addition to her latest work, Hillman has contributed several notable poetry collections. She founded the MFA program in creative writing at St. Mary’s College and authored acclaimed works such as Seasonal Works with Letters on Fire, which earned a place on the National Book Award longlist in 2013, and Extra Hidden Life, Among the Days, which won the Northern California Book Award. Hillman also leads the poetry program at the Community of Writers in Olympic Valley, California.
The National Book Award, a prestigious honor administered by the National Book Foundation, will announce its winners on November 18. Since its inception in 1936, the Iowa Writers’ Workshop has nurtured countless distinguished writers, many of whom have received renowned literary accolades.
