Community Collaboration Shines in Ricin Response Effort
October 07, 2026
The Barry-Eaton District Health Department (BEDHD) and Barry County Emergency Management Department (BCEM) have expressed profound gratitude toward the numerous entities and individuals who played crucial roles in the response to a ricin incident. The cooperative effort showcased the strength of community spirit and the dedication of various stakeholders in ensuring public safety and support.
Key Response Partners
Among the key responders were agencies like the Hastings Police & Fire Department, City of Hastings, Barry County, and the Barry-Eaton District Board of Health. In addition to these local bodies, the Barry County Humane Society, Barry County Dispatch/911, and the Barry County Prosecuting Attorney also lent their expertise. Law enforcement and emergency services were bolstered by the Barry County Sheriff’s Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Michigan State Police, and the Michigan National Guard’s 51st Civil Support Team. Essential support was further extended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team (START).
Healthcare and Service Support
Integral to the operation were healthcare entities like the Barry County United Way, Corewell Health Pennock Hospital Emergency Department, and Michigan Poison & Drug Information Center. Numerous other organizations, including the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army of Battle Creek, provided critical services, ensuring both physical and mental well-being were addressed.
Community Contributions
Local businesses, organizations, and churches played a pivotal role, offering a variety of forms of assistance. Entities such as the Barry Community Foundation, Tyden Lofts, BELFOR Environmental, and Hastings Pharmacy were instrumental. Churches including the First Presbyterian Church and Hastings Baptist Church, along with businesses like Applebee’s and Hungry Howie’s, ensured that food and essential supplies were available to those in need.
The combined efforts of these organizations made it possible to assess and remediate the affected building, allow safe re-entry for Tyden Lofts residents, and provide substantial support to displaced individuals. Services offered ranged from meals, clothing, and personal care items to emotional and mental health support, financial assistance, and more. BEDHD emphasized that this collective response exemplified “true community collaboration,” showcasing the community’s resilience and generosity during a challenging period.
