Ozone High Pollution Advisory for Maricopa County on Oct 7, 2026

Ozone Advisory Issued for Maricopa County Amid Rising Pollution Levels

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has announced a High Pollution Advisory for Maricopa County, scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, 2026. This advisory is prompted by anticipated ozone levels surpassing the federal health standard, highlighting a growing environmental concern in the area.

Ground-level ozone, a significant air pollutant, emerges from the interaction between emissions from vehicles, gasoline and diesel equipment, and industrial activities with sunlight. This chemical reaction is more intense during warmer months like spring and summer, leading to increased ozone pollution.

The effects of ozone pollution are far-reaching, impacting all residents of Maricopa County. However, children face the highest risk due to their developing lungs and outdoor activity levels. Adults with asthma, other respiratory conditions, and older adults are also particularly vulnerable. Residents are advised to reduce outdoor activities during the advisory, prioritizing the health of children and those with respiratory issues.

Guidelines for Reducing Ozone Pollution

In response to the advisory, the ADEQ and Maricopa County Air Quality Department (MCAQD) suggest several measures to curb ozone pollution and enhance air quality:

  • Encourage remote work to decrease traffic congestion.
  • Opt for carpooling, van pooling, or public transportation to minimize vehicle emissions.
  • Avoid prolonged idling in drive-thru lines by parking and walking inside establishments.
  • Consider biking or walking for short commutes.
  • Use a broom instead of a leaf blower to reduce emissions.
  • Refuel vehicles during cooler evening hours to limit evaporation.
  • Choose low-VOC or water-based paints and delay painting projects during high pollution advisories.
  • Ensure that containers of household chemicals are sealed to prevent vapor release.
  • Visit Maricopa.gov/AQ for more tips on reducing air pollution.

Restrictions During the Advisory

The High Pollution Advisory includes specific restrictions to help reduce pollution:

  • Prohibition on wood burning in fireplaces, chimeneas, and outdoor fire pits, applicable to both residents and businesses with burn permits.
  • A ban on the use of leaf blowers by government employees and contractors, with residents encouraged to avoid their use as well.
  • Recommendations to refrain from off-road vehicle use.

Background Information

A High Pollution Advisory alerts the public when an air pollutant is expected to exceed federal health standards. Ground-level ozone is created through the chemical reaction between sunlight, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
