July 2026 has brought noteworthy accomplishments from Northern Arizona University (NAU) faculty, staff, and students. These achievements span literature, athletics, and scientific research, showcasing the diverse talents within the NAU community.

Anthropology Professor’s Acclaimed Memoir to Be Released in English
Rima Brusi, an anthropology professor at NAU, is set to have her award-winning memoir, Fantasmas, published in English on November 30. The English version, translated by Jessica Powell, will also include two new chapters penned by Brusi.
Record-breaking Victory in Comrades Ultramarathon
George Kusche, an NAU alumnus with a master’s degree in statistics, triumphed in the Comrades Ultramarathon in South Africa. Kusche not only won the race but also set a new record with a time of 5:15:56, surpassing the previous record by nearly nine minutes. He was part of NAU’s National Championship cross-country team in 2022.
NAU Researchers to Present at Major Ecological Conference
A group of NAU-affiliated individuals will present their research at the Ecological Society of America’s annual meeting, taking place from July 26-31 in Salt Lake City. Participants from NAU include:

- Jeremy Forsythe, Research Associate in the Center for Ecosystems Science and Society

- Kiona Ogle, Professor in the School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems
- Daniel Schlaepfer, Senior Research Scientist in the Center for Adaptable Western Landscapes
- Ted Schuur, Regent’s Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences
- Thomas Whitham, Professor Emeritus
- Students: Mairead Brogan, Eva Deegan, Alicia Formanack, Keven Griffen, Evan Landis, Nicholas Link, Laura Nicholson, Allyson Quigley, Marlee York, and Oscar Zimmerman
