As summer approaches, North Carolina is taking steps to ensure that its vulnerable populations stay cool and safe from the dangers of heat-related illnesses. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Aging, in collaboration with area agencies on aging and local service providers, is spearheading an initiative known as Operation Fan Heat Relief. This program runs from May 1 to October 31, 2026, and aims to distribute fans to eligible recipients across the state.
Individuals aged 60 and older, along with adults with disabilities, can apply for this assistance by visiting local aging agencies throughout North Carolina during the program’s operational period. The initiative, which began in 1986, has been instrumental in improving living conditions for older adults by alleviating the effects of extreme heat.
Last year, thanks to $85,000 in donations, the NCDHHS Division of Aging was able to distribute 3,627 fans and 23 air conditioners in 93 counties. “Protecting the health and safety of our aging community remains a priority for NCDHHS, and it is crucial that assistance is available for those who may need it as temperatures start to rise,” stated Michael Leighs, Deputy Secretary for Opportunity and Well-Being. “This program provides an effective solution that helps vulnerable North Carolinians stay safe, comfortable and healthy during the summer months.”
Older adults, especially those with chronic medical conditions, are at a higher risk during extreme heat conditions due to a decreased ability to sense and respond to temperature changes. Medications can further exacerbate these risks. The relief program addresses these challenges by providing necessary tools to maintain safety during the hot months.
Hot Weather Tips for Seniors
In addition to receiving fans, seniors are encouraged to follow several guidelines to minimize heat-related risks:
- Increase fluid intake
- Regularly spend time in cool or air-conditioned environments
- Avoid strenuous activities during the afternoon
- Consult a physician regarding medications that may affect the body’s cooling ability
Operation Fan Heat Relief is supported by contributions from Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress, and Dominion Energy. These donations enable regional and local provider agencies to purchase fans for eligible individuals. Additionally, local agencies may acquire a limited number of air conditioners for those who have specific health needs.
