University of Virginia Adopts New Ceremony Approach Amid Renovations

In the early 2000s, the University of Virginia faced a unique challenge with its Final Exercises, as increasing enrollment numbers brought nearly 20,000 attendees to the iconic Lawn. The commencement event, traditionally held in a single day, required a creative solution due to ongoing renovations at the Rotunda in 2015, which restricted access and space.

To address these constraints, university administrators, backed by students from the classes of 2015, 2016, and 2017, decided to spread the ceremonies over two days. This change meant that candidates from the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences walked the Lawn on Saturday, while ceremonies for other schools were scheduled for Sunday. Despite the completion of the Rotunda renovations, the two-day format continued, accommodating the growing number of participants and attendees.
