Lombardo Faces Tight Reelection Amid Economic Challenges and Trump Ties

“[Lombardo] finds himself in a neck-and-neck race […] yoked to a highly unpopular president, a wobbling economy and a Middle Eastern war that has sent gas prices in the state soaring from $3.50 to $5 a gallon.”

Amidst a challenging political landscape, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo is navigating a complex reelection campaign. Facing a tight race against Democrat Aaron Ford, Lombardo finds himself dealing with a range of issues from national economic concerns to skyrocketing gas prices linked to international events. These factors have contributed to his vulnerability as a Republican governor in a swing state.

In a recent Politico interview, Lombardo expressed his worry about his re-election prospects. His concerns are not unfounded, as he acknowledged earlier this year his perceived lack of ability to galvanize voter turnout. Public opinion polls reflect a close contest, with the economic situation in Nevada worsening, making Lombardo’s position precarious.

Under Lombardo’s leadership, Nevada is experiencing one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. The economic policies associated with the Lombardo-Trump administration have led to increased financial burdens for families and small businesses, with rising costs and closures becoming more common. Exorbitant gas and energy prices, coupled with escalating housing costs and homelessness, pose additional challenges. Additionally, health care premiums are rising amidst an already rapid increase in health care costs in the state.

Lombardo’s campaign is emblematic of Nevada’s unique political and economic dynamics. Despite starting the year with significant fundraising advantages and favorable ratings, his current situation reflects broader national concerns, including the impact of President Trump’s policies. Nevada Democrats are quick to attribute economic hardships to the “Lombardo-Trump economy.”

The state’s reliance on tourism has taken a hit due to tariffs affecting travel from neighboring countries and an immigration crackdown. This has resulted in a 7.5% decrease in Las Vegas visitors, marking the steepest non-pandemic drop since records began in 1970. Consequently, hospitality workers face reduced hours and earnings.

“Just last month, Lombardo said that Trump was doing a fantastic job as the war with Iran has skyrocketed our gas prices,” Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Daniele Monroe-Moreno stated. The high cost of gas, reaching $7 per gallon in some areas, impacts budgets significantly, particularly for those in the hospitality sector facing limited work opportunities.

Ford, the Democratic candidate, is focusing his campaign on affordability issues, tackling topics like housing, health care, and energy costs. He criticizes Lombardo for hindering measures that would restrict corporate homebuying, a policy even Trump has backed.

“Is your life better today than it was two years ago?” asks Ford, echoing a question likely to recur in future elections. He argues that the current economic climate under Lombardo’s governance fails to improve the everyday lives of Nevadans.

Ford’s strategy mirrors the challenges faced by past incumbents, including Lombardo’s own critique of the previous administration’s economic management. The disconnect between perceived economic recovery and the reality for residents continues to shape the narrative in Nevada’s political arena.
