Dallas Water Utilities Tackles Increased Water Main Breaks Amid Heat

Dallas Grapples with Escalating Water Main Breaks Amidst Rising Demand

The Dallas Water Utilities (DWU), one of the nation’s largest municipal water systems, is navigating a challenging situation as increased temperatures boost water consumption. With a network of over 5,000 miles of water mains, some reaching diameters of 108 inches, DWU serves an expansive area of around 700 square miles.

Recent heatwaves have pushed daily water usage well above the normal 400 million gallons, surging to over 600 million gallons daily through August and into September. This spike in demand, coupled with faster water flow and the effects of dry soil conditions, has led to a noticeable rise in water main breaks and leaks.

Facing these challenges, DWU prioritizes repairs based on factors like safety, property damage, and traffic disruptions. Crews and contractors are working tirelessly around the clock, supported by a newly activated repair contract to manage the increased breakages this summer.

In the last quarter, 310 main line breaks, 377 service line leaks, and 233 hydrant issues have been resolved by DWU teams. The urgency and priority of these repairs are classified as follows:

Priority 4

Emergency response. DWU crews address these issues immediately, typically resolving them within 24 hours. These are high-risk situations affecting health, safety, or large-scale water loss.

Priority 3

Planned repair. These are addressed within a week, after emergency issues. They involve significant water loss but not immediate safety hazards.

Priority 2

Queued, minor. Leaks confirmed with minimal impact; not actively scheduled for repairs.

Priority 1

Queued, low-visibility. Minor leaks, confirmed or suspected, with low impact.

DWU emphasizes the seriousness of all leak reports and assesses each case to determine its priority. Residents are encouraged to report water main issues via the 3-1-1 system, using the category water main leak/break. Reports can also be made through Dallas 311 online or via the Dallas 311 mobile app, available on iOS and Android devices.
