Dallas Water Utilities to Notify 200,000 Customers About Line Materials

Dallas Water Utilities Launches Initiative to Identify Unknown Service Line Materials

Starting in early October, Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) will send notifications to over 200,000 customers with service lines classified as “unknown.” This move is part of DWU’s effort to comply with the federal Lead and Copper Rule and to enhance its service line inventory.

Service lines, which connect water mains to homes or buildings, can be composed of various materials. An “unknown” status does not imply the presence of lead; instead, it indicates that DWU lacks sufficient data to identify the service line material.

Notified customers are urged to fill out DWU’s Customer Service Line Survey, accessible at bit.ly/DWULeadInfo. The survey guides customers on how to locate and identify their service line and allows them to upload photos for material verification. This information helps DWU determine if further verification is necessary.

The notifications are a part of DWU’s ongoing mission to pinpoint service line materials across Dallas and keep an accurate inventory. Federal regulations require public water systems to maintain these inventories and inform customers if their service lines are categorized as lead, galvanized requiring replacement, or unknown.

DWU finalized its initial service line inventory in 2024 and is continuously working on verifying and refining this information. The utility is also assembling a more detailed inventory, due by November 1, 2027, which will aid in service line identification, sampling, replacement planning, and other lead and copper initiatives.

So far, DWU’s inventory efforts have revealed no lead service lines. For years, DWU has actively minimized potential lead sources in water infrastructure and employs corrosion-control treatments to curtail metal leaching from plumbing materials into drinking water.

Recognized as a “Superior” Public Water System by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, DWU remains committed to monitoring and meeting both state and federal water quality standards.
