Discover the Wonders of Birdwatching with Holger Pflicke in Philadelphia
Experience the marvels of birdwatching this fall with the Free Library of Philadelphia and expert guide Holger Pflicke. Whether you’re a seasoned birdwatcher or a curious beginner, these bird walks cater to all skill levels, encouraging everyone to explore and appreciate the natural beauty around us. The walks typically last between one to two hours, traversing mainly flat and accessible paths, making it an enjoyable experience for participants of all ages.
Before setting off, participants have the opportunity to learn about using binoculars, field guides, and helpful apps to enhance their birdwatching experience. Attendees are welcome to join for as much or as little time as they prefer, ensuring a flexible and welcoming environment for all. Please note that restroom facilities may be limited, so plan accordingly. The walks will proceed in moderate weather conditions but will be canceled in the event of heavy rain or storms.
The bird walk kicks off at the entrance to The Children’s Department on 20th Street, nestled between Wood and Vine, and offers a chance to discover the avian life in Philadelphia’s urban landscape.
Explore with Birding Backpacks
Enhance your birdwatching adventure with a Birding Backpack, available at 20 different library locations throughout the city. These backpacks come equipped with binoculars, field guides, and trail maps, ensuring you have all the necessary tools for a successful outing. A limited number of Birding Backpacks will also be available at each event.
About Holger Pflicke
Holger Pflicke’s passion for birdwatching began at age 12, inspired by his uncle’s efforts to reintroduce Peregrine Falcons in Germany. Since 2019, Holger has shared his expertise by leading bird walks across Philadelphia, exploring hidden green spaces, and fostering a community of nature enthusiasts. He holds the position of regional coordinator for the Pennsylvania Bird Atlas (2024-29) and contributes to the city’s breeding and mid-winter bird censuses.
