Major Infrastructure Upgrade Planned for Hatteras Village
The picturesque Hatteras Village will soon witness a significant infrastructure upgrade as plans to replace the aging Slash Creek Bridge on N.C. 12 are set in motion. This development marks a notable step in ensuring the safety and reliability of key transportation routes in the area.
The existing bridge, which has served the community for 68 years, is now considered structurally deficient. Concerns have been raised regarding its deteriorating substructure, prompting the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to take decisive action.
A $4.5 million contract has been awarded to Smith-Rowe LLC, based in Mount Airy, N.C., to carry out the bridge replacement. According to the terms of the contract, construction efforts are scheduled to commence no sooner than September 9, 2024, with a projected completion date set for no later than May 22, 2025.
During the construction period, N.C. 12 will be closed to through traffic within Hatteras Village. To accommodate this, a detour will be established on Eagle Pass Road. This alternate route will undergo resurfacing both prior to and following the completion of the bridge replacement to ensure a smooth transition for motorists.
