The University of Virginia’s most enduring international group, the UVA Club of China, has recently commemorated a significant milestone. This historic club first made headlines in the Richmond Times-Dispatch 120 years ago, just weeks after its inception.
Originally called the China Chapter of the General Alumni Association of the University of Virginia, the club was established on August 26, 1906, in what is now known as Guling.
The founding members comprised UVA alumni from the late 19th century, including the notable W.W. Yen. Yen holds the distinction of being the first international student to earn a bachelor’s degree from UVA, as noted by Justin O’Jack, UVA’s chief representative for Pacific Asia. Yen, who graduated in 1900, later became the premier of the Republic of China, and UVA’s Yen House bears his name in tribute.
“Many of the founders lived remarkably interesting lives,” stated O’Jack.
Today, the UVA Club of China continues its legacy with active branches in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hangzhou.
