In a significant boost to North Carolina’s economy, Utili-Serve, LLC, a notable player in utility infrastructure, is set to create 105 new jobs in Catawba County. The company’s decision to expand its headquarters and construct a new manufacturing facility in Conover marks an investment of over $24.8 million, reinforcing the area’s industrial prowess.
Governor Josh Stein emphasized the importance of this move: “Companies like Utili-Serve are doubling down on their investments in North Carolina because we have the ingredients for businesses to succeed and grow. This expansion strengthens our position as a national leader in advanced manufacturing, infrastructure development, and innovation as manufacturers help build our modern power grid.”
Established in Conover in 2008, Utili-Serve provides critical services to the electrical power industry. Their operations include substation construction, transformer services, and relay panel manufacturing. With 30 specialized teams, the company supports power delivery across the southeastern U.S., focusing on safety and sustainability.
The expansion in Conover is part of Utili-Serve’s broader strategy to enhance utility-scale grid projects along the East Coast. By introducing field control and relay panel manufacturing to its headquarters, the company aims to bolster support for energy providers. This will position the headquarters as a central hub for project management and logistics, enhancing their project execution capabilities from design to deployment.
“Conover is our home. Since 2008, we have connected North Carolina and the southeastern United States to power,” stated Ben Dietrich, President of Utili-Serve. “As grid demand grows, Utili-Serve remains committed to supporting our energy partners, investing locally, expanding our capabilities, and creating new opportunities for our employees and community.”
N.C. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley commented on the expansion, noting that it “reflects the confidence companies have in North Carolina’s business climate. This decision supercharges North Carolina’s reputation for technical excellence in the energy sector and underscores our commitment to create more opportunities for economic prosperity.”
The new jobs will span engineering and panel assembly, with an average salary of $62,400, surpassing the Catawba County average. This could translate to a nearly $6.6 million annual payroll impact in the region.
To support this expansion, a performance-based grant of $250,000 from the One North Carolina Fund will be provided. This fund aids local governments in attracting economic investments and job creation, with companies required to meet specific job creation and capital investment goals to receive payments. Local government matching is a prerequisite for these grants.
“Utili-Serve’s pledge to growing in Conover means increased prosperity for hardworking North Carolinians,” said Senator Mark Hollo. “These new roles will not only support and strengthen our community but also contribute to a resilient local economy and a bright future.”
Key partners aiding this project include the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, the North Carolina General Assembly, and local institutions such as Catawba Valley Community College and Duke Energy.
