Nevada Democrats Highlight School Meal Veto During National School Lunch Week
In observance of National School Lunch Week, Nevada Democrats took a symbolic stand by delivering lunch boxes to Joe Lombardo’s campaign offices in Washoe County. This action was intended to draw attention to Lombardo’s decision to veto a bill that would have ensured guaranteed school meals.
The aftermath of the veto has been significant for the Washoe County School District, which had to deplete a six-figure savings account to temporarily fund student meals. Meanwhile, escalating grocery prices have left parents with over $200,000 in school lunch debt from the previous year, a burden that continues to grow. Community members have resorted to setting up GoFundMe campaigns to alleviate some of this debt.
Adding to the debate, Lombardo expressed support for his “commanding officer” Donald Trump’s tax policy, which notably reduces food assistance for numerous Nevadans. This comes amid rising gas prices attributed to international tensions.
Official Response from Nevada State Democratic Party
Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Kate Sosland commented, “Since Joe Lombardo’s cruel veto of guaranteed school meals, Nevada families continue to accrue hundreds of thousands of dollars in lunch debt all while getting crushed by sky-high grocery bills. Under Lombardo’s failed leadership, one in four Nevada children don’t know where the next meal will come from.”
