Florida Bill Requires Colleges to Rename Roads for Charlie Kirk

In a bold legislative move, a Florida representative has introduced a bill that could see college campuses across the state renaming roads to honor a controversial figure. This proposal threatens to cut state funding if institutions fail to comply, sparking a mix of reactions.

The bill, labeled HB 113, was put forward by Kevin Steele, a Republican from Dade City. It mandates that each college and university in Florida rename an on-campus road to “Charlie James Kirk Drive” within a 90-day window following the bill’s approval. Schools that do not adhere to this requirement risk losing state financial support, as per the bill’s stipulations.

Charlie Kirk, known for his right-wing podcasting and political activism, was tragically shot at a Utah university event in September. His death prompted a widespread response, with some lamenting the loss of a significant youth influencer, while others criticized his contentious public statements that had previously led to disciplinary actions against educators.

Specific roads have already been targeted for renaming at major Florida institutions. Gemini Boulevard at the University of Central Florida, a road traversing the southern end of the campus, would bear Kirk’s name. Stadium Road at the University of Florida, centrally located near key sports facilities, is also on the list. Florida State University’s Chieftan Way, connecting to the football stadium, is included as well.

Steele, in conversation with the Orlando Sentinel, expressed that Kirk’s ability to engage in respectful dialogue and his steadfastness in his beliefs were motivational. Steele stated, “He stood on the American principle of conversation and allowing everybody to voice their opinion respectfully. And he proved and reminded us that courage is not noise, it’s conviction.”

The roads at universities were chosen due to Kirk’s frequent campus tours, where he engaged directly with students. The selected roads are strategically significant due to their prominent campus locations.

In a related gesture, New College of Florida in Sarasota has already begun efforts to honor Kirk with a statue, as announced on September 16. Similarly, Schofield Road in Lake County has been renamed “Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway” by the county commissioners.

The Florida Legislature will reconvene in January, where this bill is expected to be a topic of discussion.
