Maricopa County Initiative Merges Youth Literacy with Animal Welfare
In an innovative partnership, the Maricopa County Animal Care & Control (MCACC) has teamed up with Maricopa County Libraries to offer a unique volunteer opportunity. This program, located at the East shelter, allows young readers to enhance their reading skills while simultaneously providing comfort and enrichment to shelter dogs.
To participate, children must be enrolled in the County Library Reading Program, and prior registration is necessary to secure a reading spot. Each child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is at least 18 years old. The program allows for individual readers or small groups, with a maximum of three children and one guardian per session. Upon arrival, participants will check in at the Adoption Desk and proceed to their designated reading area for a 30-minute session. After the reading time, guests are required to check out at the Adoption Desk.

While the reading sessions do not include direct contact or handling of the dogs, they take place outside the kennels, offering a soothing presence for the animals. Participants are welcome to bring drinks in spill-proof containers, but food is not allowed. Those who wish to bring treats for the dogs may do so, with staff assisting in distribution.
