Michigan Awards $130K in Grants for Downtown Enhancement Projects

In a bid to bolster the appeal and functionality of downtown areas across Michigan, nine communities have been selected to receive significant financial support through the Main Street Vibrancy Grant Program. This initiative, a core element of the state’s ‘Make It in Michigan’ economic development strategy, is set to inject $130,250 into local projects aimed at transforming public spaces.

Funding Details and Project Highlights

The grants, announced by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, are designed to enhance downtown areas by supporting projects that foster community engagement and economic vitality. The recipient communities include Rogers City, Grand Haven, Lapeer, Old Town-Lansing, Coldwater, Three Rivers, Blissfield, Saline, and North End-Detroit.

Governor Whitmer emphasized the importance of these investments, stating, “Michigan’s future depends on creating vibrant, welcoming places where people want to build their lives.” She highlighted that these grants are vital for building local pride, supporting small businesses, and creating exciting spaces for various activities.

The grants can be used for a range of projects, including pop-up shops, marketing campaigns, and physical improvements such as seating, signage, and art installations. The intention is to create a sense of place and foster vibrant communities.

Michigan Main Street Program

The Michigan Main Street program supports these efforts through its comprehensive strategy focused on economic development via historic preservation. Communities in the program receive technical assistance and training to help revitalize their downtowns.

Michelle Parkkonen from the MEDC noted, “These grants support the Places pillar of the state’s ‘Make It in Michigan’ strategy, focusing on developing attractive places across the state by supporting local priorities.”

Impact and Local Reactions

With over $49 million in private investment generated last year alone, the Michigan Main Street initiative has shown significant impact, leading to job growth and community engagement. Local leaders express gratitude and excitement for the opportunities these grants provide.

Rogers City Executive Director Kaelie Fessler shared, “We are both thrilled and grateful to receive a Vibrancy Grant… This grant will help us turn an empty downtown space into a welcoming new spot for the community.”
