Drake University Offers Full-Tuition for Eligible Iowa Transfer Students Starting Fall 2027
In an effort to make higher education more accessible, Drake University has announced an extension of its Bulldog Promise program to include full-tuition coverage for Iowa transfer students beginning in the Fall of 2027. This initiative was revealed during National Transfer Student Week, a celebration recognizing the contributions of transfer students and the institutions that support them.
The Bulldog Promise, first introduced in 2024 and expanded in 2025, initially provided full tuition to Iowa residents who were first-time college students meeting specific academic and financial criteria. The program’s first year saw 59 students benefiting in 2025, with an additional 100 students joining in 2026. The recent extension aims to further support transfer students by covering their tuition costs.
Drake University President Marty Martin emphasized the university’s commitment to transfer students, stating, “Drake has a long history of joyfully serving transfer students, and this is one more way in which we are leaning in to support these students in securing their Drake degrees. When they walk across our graduation stage we know they will be ready to be their best selves for themselves, their families, and the many others they will serve throughout their lifetime.”
Eligibility Criteria for Transfer Students
Transfer students who wish to take advantage of the Bulldog Promise must adhere to specific requirements, including:
- Meeting Iowa residency requirements set by the Iowa Department of Education.
- Maintaining a cumulative collegiate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Qualifying for maximum Federal Pell Grant aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by July 1 before the fall semester.
- Being a transfer student enrolling at Drake in Fall 2027 or later.
- Pursuing their first bachelor’s degree at Drake.
While the Bulldog Promise covers tuition, it does not extend to room, board, or meal plan expenses. However, students have the option to live off-campus if they reside with a parent or guardian within 45 miles of Drake, are married, or have been out of high school for at least two years.
