The University of Iowa is embarking on the next stage of creating its Strategic Plan for 2027–32, building on prior achievements and extensive input from the university community. This initiative follows the successful implementation of the current strategic plan, with a focus on refining the university’s core missions: teaching, research, and service.
A newly formed executive planning team will steer the development of this strategic plan. In collaboration, the existing strategic plan work groups and three newly established goal-based planning teams will propose priorities aimed at enhancing the university’s mission-driven goals.
Kevin Kregel, executive vice president and provost, remarked, “We’ve achieved a lot through our current strategic plan because people across the university have worked together around a shared set of priorities. As we look ahead, we can build on that momentum, focus on what Iowa does exceptionally well, and identify where we can have the greatest impact for our students, faculty, staff, and the people we serve across the state.”
Throughout fall and winter, the goal-based planning teams will engage with faculty, staff, students, university leaders, and external stakeholders. The University of Iowa aims to have its new strategic plan ratified by the Iowa Board of Regents and ready for implementation by July 1, 2027.
Earlier this year, the planning process commenced with a comprehensive review of strategic plans from various university sectors, the Iowa Board of Regents, and peer institutions, complemented by campus-wide listening sessions. These sessions included 212 participants across more than 20 events, discussing Iowa’s unique attributes, essential elements of the current plan, and potential new directions for the university.
Building on Progress
The forthcoming strategic plan seeks to build on notable progress achieved under the university’s 2022–27 Strategic Plan. The University of Iowa has already met or surpassed several of its 2027 target measures, including those concerning student retention and graduation rates, high-impact learning experiences, research funding growth, philanthropic contributions, and UI Health Care patient capacity.
This progress stems from widespread collaboration. Currently, 235 individuals actively engage in the plan’s implementation through Strategic Plan Action and Resource Committee work groups and tactic teams, with additional support, feedback, and expertise contributed by many others across campus.
The University of Iowa’s collaborative spirit will continue to inform its strategic pursuits in teaching, research, and service, while it remains committed to improving lives within Iowa and beyond. Continuous updates and feedback opportunities will be available throughout the planning process at strategicplan.uiowa.edu.
