Villanova’s 2026 Sustainability Conference Concludes with Key Agreements

Villanova University Concludes Influential Sustainability Conference in Rome

ROME, Italy (Oct. 15, 2026) — Villanova University’s 2026 International Sustainability Conference in Rome has come to a successful close. The event marked a significant week of global dialogue on environmental stewardship, featuring key partnerships and engagements with the Vatican.

Fostering Global Dialogue on Sustainability

Over four days, more than 350 delegates, including academics, Church leaders, and policy experts, gathered at the Augustinianum and the Pontifical Gardens of Castel Gandolfo. The conference featured influential speakers like Dr. Robert D. Bullard, who stressed, “Science, research, data, and facts must be married with action. We need to act now, not postpone action, especially with climate change—it’s here, right now. Those who are most in need of assistance are the ones who are hurt first, worst, and longest. That’s why it is critical that we move swiftly to address those needs.”

Cardinal Michael Czerny, S.J., recipient of the inaugural Pope Leo XIV Sustainability Medal, conveyed the message that both artificial intelligence and private property carry a ‘social mortgage,’ a concept rooted in Catholic social teaching. He emphasized the ethical responsibilities these entities have toward humanity.

Wanjira Mathai, representing the World Resources Institute, spoke on the importance of integrating indigenous wisdom into climate solutions, urging for a shared moral framework driven by gratitude rather than guilt.

The event’s agenda included discussions on housing equity, sustainable finance, and the ethical implications of artificial intelligence, aligning closely with themes from the recent papal encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas.

Significant Honors and Agreements

At Borgo Laudato Si’, the historic Pope Leo XIV Sustainability Medal was awarded for the first time, honoring leadership at the intersection of ethics and environmental care. Although Pope Leo XIV was absent due to health reasons, his presence was felt through prayers for his recovery.

A crucial Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Villanova University and the Laudato Si’ Center for Higher Education, paving the way for collaborative research and initiatives focused on ecological stewardship.

Future Pathways and Initiatives

During the closing dinner, Rev. Peter M. Donohue, O.S.A., Ph.D., highlighted the importance of turning dialogue into actionable steps. “Villanova University was honored to convene the 2026 International Sustainability Conference in Rome and to bring together people from across disciplines, cultures and perspectives around a shared responsibility to care for our common home,” he stated.

Rev. John Abubakar, O.S.A., Ph.D., emphasized the need for relational reconciliation in addressing ecological issues, underscoring the event’s aim to integrate climate ethics into policy.

With operational groups now active, both institutions will advance joint research and initiatives. The next International Sustainability Conference is slated for 2028, with the location yet to be finalized.
