The University of Arizona is setting its sights on the future with a comprehensive capital improvement plan submitted to the Arizona Board of Regents at a recent meeting at Northern Arizona University. This ambitious blueprint aims to usher the university into a new era through 2031, aligning with strategic goals of student success, groundbreaking research, and community engagement.
Spanning fiscal years up to 2031, the plan proposes a series of high-priority projects with a hefty price tag of $183.5 million. These projects range from essential updates like deferred maintenance and lab modernization to infrastructure enhancements for the Arizona State Museum. Other significant inclusions are the overhaul of outdoor campus spaces, including pedestrian and bike paths, and upgrades to athletic facilities such as McKale Center, Casino Del Sol Stadium, Hi Corbett Field, and on-campus housing.
The board also greenlit the university’s annual capital plan, which pinpoints specific projects from the larger capital improvement strategy. This year’s plan introduces five new initiatives, including:
- Deferred maintenance improvements, covering fire alarm upgrades, elevator compliance, and utility infrastructure enhancements.
- Technology modernization across the campus to bolster teaching, research, and operational efficiencies.
- Renovations of aging research facilities, focusing on lab modernizations and updates to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure.
- Enhancements to campus safety through advanced analytics and scalable security measures.
- Upgrades to student areas, cultural spaces, and classrooms to enrich the overall student experience.
U of A extends DesireĆ© Reed-Francois’ contract through 2032
In a move to ensure continuity in its athletic leadership, the regents extended DesireĆ© Reed-Francois’ contract as the R. Ken Coit Director of Athletics through 2032. Since her appointment in 2024, Reed-Francois has steered Arizona Athletics through significant milestones, including the transition to the Big 12 Conference and clinching the Big 12 Allstate Commissioner’s Cup. Under her leadership, the university celebrated the men’s basketball team’s return to the Final Four and secured consecutive national titles in triathlon, among other achievements.
“I am honored to continue serving the University of Arizona and Arizona Athletics,” Reed-Francois stated. “We will continue to pursue championships, graduate future leaders and make Wildcat Nation proud.”
Reed-Francois also played a pivotal role in sealing new naming-rights agreements with Casino del Sol and ALKEME Insurance. The 2025-26 academic year marked a historic revenue milestone with Arizona Athletics raising a record $46 million through the Wildcat Club (source).
