LANSING, Mich. — Governor Gretchen Whitmer has embarked on a strategic mission to Spain, aiming to fortify Michigan’s economic ties with the European nation. This three-day initiative seeks to promote the state’s economic appeal to foreign investors, showcasing why Michigan continues to be an ideal choice for international business ventures.
Over the past decade, Spain has become a significant partner for Michigan, ranking as its fifth-largest trading partner among U.S. states. Spanish companies have invested in eight projects in Michigan, generating 926 jobs and contributing $283.98 million in capital investment. Moreover, Spain stands as Michigan’s 11th-largest export market, with exports exceeding $770 million in 2023.
Governor Whitmer emphasized the importance of this mission, stating, “This investment mission to Spain is an opportunity to expand Michigan’s global footprint and attract new economic opportunities to our state.” The governor, along with Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) CEO Quentin L. Messer, Jr., and other delegates, will engage with leaders from both the public and private sectors to foster investments that bring high-quality jobs to Michigan.
During the visit, the Michigan delegation plans to meet with Gestamp, a multinational company that has recently expanded into Mason, Lapeer, and Chelsea, Michigan. The expansion includes areas represented by several state senators and representatives, highlighting the bipartisan support for economic growth initiatives.
In Madrid, the delegation will be accompanied by Maria Jesus Fernandez, the Trade Commissioner of Spain in Chicago, further emphasizing the collaborative effort to boost economic connections. Quentin L. Messer, Jr. remarked, “Connecting directly with business and government leaders in Spain is another valuable opportunity to showcase Michigan as a prime destination for global investment.”
Whitmer-Gilchrist Administration’s Efforts to Secure International Investment
This mission is part of ongoing efforts by Governor Whitmer and Lt. Governor Gilchrist II to secure international investments. Earlier, Lt. Governor Gilchrist led similar missions to the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, promoting Michigan’s aerospace and defense capabilities. Additionally, Governor Whitmer’s previous missions to South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Paris, and Germany have resulted in substantial investment commitments, including a $63 million investment from DENSO.
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the Michigan Economic Development Foundation support this economic development mission. These organizations play a crucial role in promoting Michigan as a hub for private investments, ultimately boosting job creation and wages across the state.
