Michigan Strengthens Economic Ties with Spain Through Governor-Led Delegation
LANSING, Mich. — Michigan has taken significant strides to bolster its economic relationship with Spain, led by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The recent economic mission to Spain focused on enhancing Michigan’s “Make It in Michigan” strategy, aiming to invest in the state’s people, rejuvenate places, and secure projects by fostering global partnerships and drawing foreign direct investment.
Governor Whitmer emphasized the importance of international investments in driving Michigan’s economic growth. “Investment is essential to Michigan’s continued economic growth, and this mission highlights our commitment to building strong partnerships that create good-paying jobs and continue innovation across our state,” she stated. The governor highlighted Spain as a vital ally in sectors crucial to Michigan’s future, stressing the shared economic and sustainable vision.
The Team Michigan delegation, which included Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) CEO Quentin L. Messer, Jr., engaged in a business roundtable with Spanish industry leaders. The delegation also conducted discussions with Gestamp, a multinational company expanding its operations in Mason, Lapeer, and Chelsea, Michigan. Meetings with senior officials in Madrid and Catalonia were pivotal, exploring new avenues for trade and investment. The governor met with Catalonia’s President Salvador Illa Roca and other Catalan officials, followed by discussions in Madrid with Minister of Industry and Tourism Jordi Hereu Boher and Secretary of State for Industry Rebecca Torro.
Quentin L. Messer, Jr. expressed gratitude for the reception in Spain, noting, “We are grateful for the hospitality that we were shown in Spain. Team Michigan remains laser-focused on creating Michigan jobs and opportunities through global investment.” He highlighted the significance of these missions in promoting Michigan as a favorable destination for foreign investments, particularly in advanced manufacturing and clean energy.
The economic relationship between Michigan and Spain is robust, with Michigan ranking as Spain’s fifth-largest trading partner among U.S. states. In 2023, Michigan exported over $770 million in goods to Spain, and Spanish companies have been instrumental in creating jobs and capital investment in Michigan over the last decade.
This economic mission received support from the MEDC and the Michigan Economic Development Foundation, which plays a critical role in promoting and funding economic development in Michigan to boost private investments, job creation, and wage growth.
