Governor Stein Criticizes Legislature’s Override of His Vetoes

Governor Stein Criticizes Legislature for Veto Overrides Amidst Budget Delays

The political tensions in North Carolina escalated as Governor Stein issued a statement criticizing the General Assembly’s recent actions. His comments came after the legislature overrode his vetoes on several significant bills, namely Senate Bill 153, Senate Bill 558, Senate Bill 227, and House Bill 171.

Governor Stein expressed frustration over the lawmakers’ priorities, highlighting their failure to address crucial issues like pay raises for teachers and law enforcement officers. “As the legislature leaves teachers and law enforcement officers waiting for hard-earned and desperately needed pay raises, members of the General Assembly are stoking the culture wars that divide us rather than fulfilling their long-overdue responsibility of passing a budget,” he stated.

In his statement, Governor Stein accused the General Assembly of focusing on divisive cultural issues rather than the essential work of passing a budget. He urged them to prioritize their responsibilities to the citizens of North Carolina. According to Stein, the overridden bills attempt to “whitewash the diversity that makes our state strong” and redirect state law enforcement officers from their current duties to act as federal immigration agents.
