In a significant development within North Carolina’s fight against insurance fraud, officials have apprehended two individuals allegedly involved in deceptive practices following a vehicular accident. The arrests underscore ongoing efforts by authorities to curb fraudulent activities that contribute to rising insurance costs for consumers.
Insurance Fraud Charges
Joshua Wade Bethea, 41, and Stephanie Marcia Bonitto, 36, both residing in Charlotte, North Carolina, have been charged with insurance fraud, obtaining property by false pretense, and common law uttering. These charges are linked to a car crash incident involving the duo.
Authorities from the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Bethea of manipulating a chiropractic invoice to falsely claim services from State Farm Insurance Co., resulting in a $4,500 settlement. Similarly, Bonitto is alleged to have submitted falsified massage therapy invoices, securing a $9,005 payout.
Arrest Details and Official Statement
The arrests took place on June 13, with both Bethea and Bonitto being released on a $10,000 secured bond. Commissioner Mike Causey emphasized the broader impact of such fraudulent activities, stating, “Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime. It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.”
