Governor Stein Enacts Two New Bills, Addresses Tax Relief and University Funding
In a significant legislative move, Governor Stein has signed into law two pivotal bills aimed at addressing tax relief and capital needs within the state. These bills reflect ongoing efforts to tackle the high cost of living and bolster educational infrastructure.
Senate Bill 889: Tax Relief with Limitations
Upon the signing of Senate Bill 889, Governor Stein expressed mixed feelings about its scope and effectiveness. “The cost of living is too high. This law provides tax relief for North Carolinians who are feeling pain in their pocketbooks,” he stated. However, he also noted the bill’s limitations, emphasizing that it benefits residents in only a few counties.
Governor Stein highlighted the necessity of broader measures to reduce living costs, indicating his commitment to advocating for broader tax cuts for working and middle-class families. He also pointed out the need to lower expenses related to housing, electricity, child care, and health care.
Additionally, Governor Stein voiced his concerns regarding the impact of the new law on Hurricane Helene recovery efforts in Buncombe County. He urged the Senate to consider passing Senate Bill 474, which aims to protect Buncombe County and other areas still recovering from the storm.
House Bill 1123: Supporting University Infrastructure
The second bill signed, House Bill 1123, is designed to address the capital needs of institutions within the University of North Carolina system. Governor Stein remarked, “This bill will help meet the capital needs of institutions in the University of North Carolina system,” highlighting its significance in supporting the state’s educational infrastructure.
