Governor Stein Declares 2026 as Stanley Cup Summer for Hurricanes Victory

North Carolina Declares a Summer of Celebration Following Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup Victory

In a move that underscores North Carolina’s growing enthusiasm for hockey, Governor Josh Stein has officially declared the summer of 2026 as “Stanley Cup Summer.” This announcement comes in the wake of the Carolina Hurricanes’ triumphant victory in securing the Stanley Cup, highlighting the state’s passion for the sport.

The governor also revealed that a section of Edwards Mill Road, stretching from Wade Avenue to NC 54, will be renamed “Hurricanes Highway” in a nod to the team’s remarkable achievement. Governor Josh Stein stated, “Stanley Cup Summer has officially begun. The Hurricanes won the hardest title in sports as the consummate team, each player doing his job. Their victory unified the state, bringing together North Carolinians who hail from every corner of the state and who cheer for their own favorite college team. Today, we are all Caniacs! Sound the siren – it’s time to celebrate!”

Across the state, celebrations are taking place, including a highly anticipated parade in downtown Raleigh on Saturday, June 20. The event will showcase the Stanley Cup and feature a speech by Governor Stein. In a gesture to support fans, all state parking decks and lots will be open and free of charge for those attending the parade. For more details on the parade, click here.

Beyond the festivities, “Stanley Cup Summer” highlights the economic impact of sports tourism in North Carolina. The Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance (GRSA) reported hosting over 136,000 fans during the first quarter of 2026, driven by more than 100 events. This influx of visitors serves as a significant economic boost for the state.

The Carolina Hurricanes contribute significantly to the local economy, generating hundreds of millions of dollars for hotels, restaurants, and retail businesses. During the Stanley Cup playoffs, each of the 10 home games reportedly brought in up to $3 million in tourism revenue, with local businesses experiencing increased patronage from fans.
