Maricopa County Updates: Elections, Public Health, and Community Events

BNSF Rail Project in Wittmann Raises Questions

Residents of Wittmann have expressed concerns over BNSF Railway’s ongoing construction for a new intermodal facility. In response to these concerns, Maricopa County Supervisor Debbie Lesko reached out to the Federal Surface Transportation Board (STB) on March 30, 2026, to seek clarity on federal permitting and environmental review requirements.

According to BNSF officials, such projects do not require federal approval due to existing preemption rights. Supervisor Lesko aimed to confirm this with the STB, though a formal reply is pending. Additional information has been provided and can be accessed here.

Maricopa County’s Legal Move Concerning Elections

The Board of Supervisors in Maricopa County has decided to seek a stay on a recent legal ruling that impacts election procedures. If the request for a stay is denied, they plan to appeal the decision. This comes as early voting commences for the May 19th elections and with primary elections advanced to July.

The situation is complicated by conflicting state laws regarding election responsibilities between the Recorder’s office and the Board, leading to potential legal risks for election staff. A stay would provide time to resolve these issues. The Board emphasizes the need for clear processes to ensure secure elections.

Community Engagement and Events

Supervisor Debbie Lesko has been actively engaging with the community through various events. She recently visited Glencroft Retirement Facility and spoke at the Southwest Valley Women’s Club meeting. Additionally, she attended the Sun City West Club meeting, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to connect with residents.

Lesko’s office also participated in the State of the City events in Avondale and Surprise, where they learned about local developments and future plans.

Exceptional Workers Summit and Other Initiatives

Lesko attended the Exceptional Workers Summit at ASU West, focusing on neurodiversity in the workplace. The event aimed to educate employers on the benefits of hiring individuals with autism.

In a separate community meeting, Lesko joined Maricopa County Sheriff Jerry Sheridan to discuss public safety concerns in Youngtown, highlighting the county’s commitment to addressing community issues.

Library and Public Health Announcements

The Maricopa County Library District has unveiled new online tools for a more streamlined user experience. Meanwhile, the Department of Public Health confirmed the first heat-related death of 2026, urging residents to prioritize heat safety as the season progresses. The County plans to launch a heat relief network and a billboard campaign to promote safety measures.
