Flint Celebrates Black History Month with Events at City Dome

FLINT, MI – In a significant move to commemorate Black History Month, the City of Flint is set to host a series of events that emphasize education, reflection, and community involvement. These gatherings, situated at the City of Flint Dome, aim to provide students, seniors, and community members with opportunities to celebrate the achievements of Black leaders, delve into local history, and engage in constructive discussions about the future.

Black History Month Event Lineup:

“St. John Street: Story of a Neighborhood” Movie Premiere

Date: Thursday, February 27, 2025

Location: City of Flint Dome

This film screening, primarily for Flint’s senior citizens, explores the historical significance of the St. John Street neighborhood. Once a flourishing African American community, it played an integral role in Flint’s development. The documentary highlights the enduring legacy of the area and its residents. During the event, Carter McWright, owner of Music Plant, will be honored with a Key to the City.

“Today is Tomorrow’s History” Black History Program

Aimed at high school students, this engaging Black History Month program seeks to inspire future generations by showcasing the accomplishments of Black leaders. Students are encouraged to view themselves as potential changemakers. The event will include speeches by Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilcrest, cultural performances, and interactive discussions.

Community Town Hall Meeting

Moderated by Dawn Jones, ABC 12 News
Concluding Black History Month, the City of Flint will host a Community Town Hall focusing on the challenges faced by Black teenagers in contemporary society. ABC 12’s Dawn Jones will moderate this event, which will feature a panel of community leaders, educators, and youth voices discussing topics such as racial identity, education, social justice, and future directions.

Mayor Sheldon Neeley calls on all Flint residents to partake in these events, stating: “Black History Month is a time for reflection, recognition, and action. These programs highlight where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going. We invite the entire community to join us as we honor our history and shape our future together.”
