Wisconsin Ramps Up Emergency Operations Amid Severe Winter Storm
As a major winter storm sweeps across Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM) has responded by elevating the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) to Level 3. This level denotes increased monitoring and support to manage ongoing or anticipated incidents effectively.
On March 15, at 9 a.m., the SEOC was escalated to this level, reflecting the state’s commitment to ensuring safety and coordination among various agencies. The Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs, along with other agencies, is actively working with local emergency managers to provide necessary assistance. The agencies involved in this effort include the Department of Transportation – Wisconsin State Patrol, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Health Services, and Wisconsin voluntary agencies.
Staying Safe During the Winter Storm
Residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed through local communication channels such as websites, social media, local alert systems, or news outlets. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) warns that travel conditions are hazardous, particularly in the northwest, north central, and northeast counties. People are urged to avoid travel in these areas to ensure safety.
Additional precautions to consider include:
- Ensure multiple methods for receiving weather alerts, including enabling wireless emergency alerts on mobile devices. These alerts are free and provide critical weather and safety information.
- Check your mobile device settings to enable these alerts if required.
- Older phones may not support these alerts, and some devices might require manual activation.
- Some carriers refer to these alerts as “Government Alerts” or “Emergency Alert Messages.”
- If stranded in a vehicle, remain inside, use hazard lights, call 911, and, if possible, move the vehicle out of traffic.
- Prepare for power outages by keeping cell phones and power banks charged.
- In case of potential roof collapse due to heavy snow, evacuate immediately and contact emergency services. Signs include roof sagging and unusual noises.
- Check on neighbors, especially those who may need additional assistance like the elderly or disabled.
- Post-storm safety includes checking for hazards such as ice, downed power lines, and debris. Avoid overexertion during cleanup efforts.
