FEMA Assistance Deadline Approaches for Wisconsin Flood Victims

Deadline Approaching for FEMA Assistance in Wisconsin’s Flood-Affected Areas

Residents of Milwaukee, Washington, and Waukesha counties who have experienced damage from the August floods have a limited timeframe remaining to apply for assistance under FEMA’s Individual Assistance program. The final date to submit applications is Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025.

It’s important to clarify that the recent denial by FEMA for Wisconsin’s Public Assistance program does not impact those eligible for Individual Assistance. These two programs are designed to serve different needs.

To apply for FEMA assistance, even if a FEMA assessment team has already visited or if you have reported damages via 211, you must complete an application. Begin the process at DisasterAssistance.gov or call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. Alternatively, applications can be submitted in person at a disaster recovery center. Locate a center by visiting fema.gov/drc.

Addressing Mold Problems

Flood-related damages can lead to persistent mold issues unless addressed promptly. While FEMA may not cover all costs related to mold remediation, they might provide financial assistance. Homeowners who have received funds but continue to face mold issues can appeal for further support. This appeal will trigger a secondary inspection of the affected property.

The state offers resources to educate residents on the health impacts of mold, prevention strategies, and remediation techniques. Visit the Wisconsin Department of Health Services webpage for more information.

Appealing FEMA’s Decision

If you disagree with FEMA’s decision or the assistance amount, you have the option to file an appeal. This must be done within 60 days from the date of your decision letter. An appeal form is included at the end of your FEMA letter, which aids in providing necessary information and explaining your need for assistance.

Appeals should be postmarked within 60 days of the decision date. Supporting documents and appeal letters can be uploaded to your personal FEMA account online.

Additional submission methods include:

  • In-person: Visit a Disaster Recovery Center. Use the locator at FEMA.gov/drc.
  • Mail: Send to FEMA National Processing Service Center, P.O. Box 10055, Hyattsville MD 20782-7055.
  • Fax: Send to 800-827-8112 Attention: FEMA.

Ensure all documents include:

  • Your full name
  • Current phone number and address
  • Disaster number and nine-digit FEMA application number on all pages
  • Address of the disaster-damaged home

If a third party is submitting on your behalf, include a signed authorization statement. For detailed information on the appeal process, visit FEMA.gov/appeal.

Upcoming SBA Loan Application Deadline

Homeowners and renters in flood-impacted areas can also apply for loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for home and personal property repairs, including automobiles. The application deadline for these loans is Nov. 10, 2025.

The SBA offers both physical disaster loans and Economic Injury Disaster Loans (Working Capital). Businesses in the affected counties have until Nov. 10, 2025, to apply. Economic Injury Disaster Loan applications are open for businesses in additional counties, with a deadline of June 11, 2026.
