NEW YORK (AP) — New York City’s political scene has witnessed a remarkable rise as Zohran Mamdani, a former state lawmaker, declared victory in the Democratic primary for mayor. His announcement came from a rooftop bar in Queens, following the concession of former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Although the final results won’t be confirmed until the ranked choice count is completed on July 1, Mamdani’s candidacy represents a historic shift, as he aims to become the city’s first Muslim and Indian American mayor, as well as its youngest in decades. Read more.
Mamdani’s Background and Family
Born in Kampala, Uganda, to Indian parents, Mamdani became a U.S. citizen in 2018, shortly after completing his college education. His mother, Mira Nair, is a celebrated filmmaker known for works like “Monsoon Wedding,” while his father, Mahmood Mamdani, is an anthropology professor at Columbia University. Mamdani, along with his wife Rama Duwaji, a Syrian American artist, resides in Astoria, Queens. More here.
From Rapper to Politician
Mamdani’s journey includes a stint as a rapper, performing under the names Young Cardamom and Mr. Cardamom. His musical career included songs like “Nani,” dedicated to his grandmother, which gained attention during his campaign. Critics have pointed to his lyrics in “Salaam” as controversial, yet Mamdani embraces his artistic past.
Political Beginnings
His foray into politics began by assisting Democratic campaigns in Queens and Brooklyn. Elected to the New York Assembly in 2020, Mamdani quickly established himself by advocating for public transport initiatives and proposing legislation to restrict nonprofit support of Israeli settlement activities. His critics, including Cuomo, challenge his preparedness, but Mamdani counters by highlighting his fresh perspective.
Innovative Campaign Tactics
Using creative campaign videos filled with Bollywood and cultural references, Mamdani captivated a diverse audience. His stunts, like participating in the Coney Island polar plunge to emphasize his rent-freeze proposal, showcased his commitment to connecting with New Yorkers. Through social media, he engaged voters by communicating in multiple languages.
Progressive Agenda
Mamdani’s campaign promises focus on affordability and social equity, with proposals for free child care, public transportation, and affordable housing funded by taxing the wealthy. His progressive stance has earned endorsements from notable figures like U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Stance on Palestinian Issues
Mamdani’s support for Palestinian rights has been a contentious topic, with opponents accusing him of antisemitism. He advocates for equal rights in Israel and has faced criticism for not condemning calls to “globalize the intifada.” Nonetheless, he remains committed to dialogue and understanding differing perspectives, as emphasized in his victory speech.
“While I will not abandon my beliefs or my commitments, grounded in a demand for equality, for humanity, for all those who walk this earth, you have my word to reach further, to understand the perspectives of those with whom I disagree, and to wrestle deeply with those disagreements,” Mamdani said.
