Basketball Showdown as Virginia Peninsula Community College Eyes National Stage

The Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) men’s basketball team is set for a high-stakes weekend, competing in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Mid-Atlantic District 10 tournament. Their journey begins with a semifinal match against the Community College of Allegheny County, staged at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown this Friday at 8:30 PM.

Victory in the semifinal will secure a spot in Sunday’s title game at 1 PM, with the winner advancing to the nationals in Herkimer, New York. VPCC, boasting a 21-6 record and ranked 11th nationally in their division, comes off an impressive streak of 11 wins, including a dominant performance at the Region 10 tournament last weekend in North Carolina. They defeated Patrick & Henry CC 97-67 and Sandhills 100-71 to claim the title.

Apprentice School Teams Gear Up for National Competition

Both men’s and women’s teams from the Apprentice School, after clinching victories in the New South Athletic Conference tournaments, have been seeded sixth for the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association nationals in Buffalo, New York. The men’s team, reigning USCAA champions, will face third-seeded Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse on Tuesday, preceded by Monday’s skills competition and banquet. Meanwhile, the Builders’ women’s team will challenge third-seeded Paul Quinn of Dallas, marking their first national appearance since 2023.

William & Mary Women Lead in CAA Swimming Championships

In the realm of college swimming, the William & Mary women’s team took an early lead at the Coastal Athletic Association championship meet, held at the Hampton Aquaplex. The event, which commenced on Wednesday and continues through Saturday, saw W&M’s women scoring 120 points. This puts them ahead of three-time defending champions UNCW, who scored 116 points, while Towson follows closely with 110 points.

On the men’s side, UNCW leads with 133 points, with Towson and Drexel trailing at 113 and 100 points, respectively. The Tribe’s women’s relay team shone in the 800-yard freestyle relay, with Ellie Hunt, Flynn Truskett, Haley Lehman, and Tess Lankford finishing in 7:14.30 to claim gold.

No. 18 Virginia Triumphs in Softball Against George Mason

In college softball, No. 18 Virginia extended their winning streak to 14 games, the longest since 1988, with a 9-6 victory over George Mason in Charlottesville. Bella Cabral’s repeat performance of two home runs and Hannah Weismer’s consecutive-game homer were pivotal in securing the win. Meanwhile, Logan Pickford of George Mason contributed with an RBI double and two runs.

Accolades for William & Mary Men’s Tennis Duo

William & Mary’s Oliver Hague and Gur Trakhtenberg have been named the CAA Men’s Doubles Team of the Week. Their exceptional performance, going 2-0 at No. 1 doubles, was instrumental in the Tribe’s victories against Navy (7-0) and Brown (4-2). Hague and Trakhtenberg also excelled in singles, compiling a combined 3-0 record.

William & Mary Women’s Tennis Dominates Longwood

The William & Mary women’s tennis team, boasting a 6-2 record, secured a decisive 7-0 victory over Longwood at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. Singles victories by Sia Chaudry, Tilda Larsson, Francesca Davis, Mira Kernagis, Rebeka Svabikova, and Alexia Gonzalez-Galino followed the doubles wins of Davis-Larsson and Pell-Vaissaud, cementing a robust performance ahead of CAA play.
