Rebuilding After Devastating Fires in Hampton Roads: Stories of Recovery

In the wake of numerous fires that swept through Hampton Roads last year, the road to recovery has been challenging for local businesses and residents. With properties either damaged or destroyed, rebuilding efforts have been ongoing and complex.

Reviving a Beloved Eatery

On February 5, a two-alarm blaze devastated Crudo Nudo, a well-loved Spanish tapas spot in Norfolk’s Ghent neighborhood. Chef Eric Nelson, who has helmed the restaurant for over eight years, has spent the past year focused on reconstruction. Nelson revealed that the kitchen was completely destroyed, with smoke and roof damage affecting the rest of the building. The entire structure had to be gutted.

“They had to take it down to basically nothing,” Nelson recounted. Reconstruction has been complicated by tariff policies under President Donald Trump, making materials like steel and aluminum significantly more expensive. “Things have tripled expense-wise,” he noted.

Despite these hurdles, community support has been strong, with a GoFundMe campaign raising over $14,000. Nelson aims to reopen Crudo Nudo by January or on the anniversary of the fire.

Arson Allegation Shakes Tattoo Shop

In Portsmouth, a suspected arson fire caused severe damage to Dan the Piercing Man Tattoo & Body Piercing just weeks after its grand opening. Owner Daniel Steele was stunned to learn that someone had apparently targeted his shop with gasoline-filled bottles.

Steele, who only had liability insurance, faced significant losses, including equipment and personal items. However, the property owner aided in repairs, and a GoFundMe campaign helped cover some expenses. Steele reopened the shop in September, finding a silver lining in the improved appearance of the premises.

A Year of Challenges for an Artist

Tattoo artist Corinna Sayward encountered not one but two fires in 2025. An August fire at Seven Cities Tattoo Company destroyed her equipment, and months later, her car caught fire, consuming her newly replaced gear. Despite these setbacks, Sayward received substantial community support.

Sayward leveraged GoFundMe donations to replace her equipment twice. Her positive outlook has helped her navigate these challenges, and she is now working at Studio Evolve in Virginia Beach.

Apartment Fire Displaces Residents

An overnight fire in October at the Magruder Run Apartments in Hampton displaced 33 residents. The American Red Cross quickly stepped in to offer emergency support, providing shelter and resources to those affected.

Regional Disaster Officer Katie Niehoff emphasized the organization’s commitment to long-term assistance, noting that case workers continue to support impacted individuals as needed.

With a rise in wintertime fire risks due to heaters and holiday decorations, Niehoff urges residents to ensure their homes are equipped with working smoke detectors and other safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
