Kiki Rough’s TikTok Fame with “Recession Recipes” Amidst SNAP Uncertainty

Emerging TikTok Star Kiki Rough Finds Fame with Budget-Friendly Cooking

In an era where financial uncertainty looms, Kiki Rough has struck a chord with countless followers through her innovative cooking series, “Recession Recipes,” on TikTok. Featured in Lidia Bastianich’s PBS special, “Lidia Celebrates America: A Nation of Neighbors,” Rough shares her journey of helping people make the most of their resources.

Rough, known for her distinctive heart-shaped glasses, explains her mission to Bastianich: “I think a lot of people facing food insecurity right now feel very alone and isolated, and what I’m trying to do is make sure that they have the skills to feel normal and feel empowered, even though everything else feels like it’s on fire.” With the backdrop of fluctuating SNAP benefits, her content is more relevant than ever.

Originally from Hoffman Estates, Rough, 29, now resides in Porter County, Indiana. Her “Recession Recipes” series, which began in February, quickly gained traction. Initially, Rough’s TikTok presence was built on quirky videos featuring her and her husband, but a shift occurred after she lost her job in the software industry. A spontaneous video of a budget-friendly meal skyrocketed her following to 150,000 overnight.

Despite her newfound online success, Rough continues to work part-time at a software firm. “I don’t make enough from this series to do it full-time,” she notes, balancing her time between her job and creating content.

From Life Challenges to Culinary Creativity

Rough’s culinary expertise stems from personal experience rather than formal training. Her cooking journey began out of necessity, managing multiple minimum-wage jobs and a tight budget. “I had to drop out of college for a while and all of a sudden I was working three minimum-wage jobs. I was on food stamps, but I only got about $40 a month,” she recalls.

Preserving Culinary History for Modern Kitchens

Rough draws inspiration from historical cookbooks, adapting recipes from the early 1900s and the Depression era. She notes, “We’ve already gone through this history and lived it as a society, so I can just pull from the pros.” However, she acknowledges the need to adjust for modern challenges such as food allergies and ingredient availability.

She sources these vintage cookbooks from estate sales and antique stores, emphasizing the importance of making recipes accessible to those with limited resources. “There is no room for experimentation in lower-income kitchens right now, so I have to make sure everything I’m putting out is an entry-level skill set,” she explains.

Looking to the Future

Although Rough has been approached by book agents, she remains cautious about maintaining her values if she decides to pursue a book deal. Her aspirations extend to television, where she dreams of creating a show that combines cooking with personal storytelling, drawing inspiration from figures like Mr. Rogers and Bob Ross.

Despite the pressures and growing responsibilities, Rough remains dedicated to her followers, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and relatability. Her journey illustrates the power of creativity and resilience in the face of adversity, providing hope and practical solutions to those in need.
