Dominion Energy Advances with Major Offshore Wind Farm Development
Dominion Energy has achieved a significant milestone in the construction of its offshore wind farm project located near Virginia Beach. This development marks a crucial step forward in the company’s renewable energy initiatives.
On Wednesday, crews successfully installed the first turbine tower, a colossal structure rising approximately 482 feet above sea level, according to Dominion spokesperson Jeremy Slayton. The monumental installation ship, Charybdis, has completed the setup of the tower, one turbine, and an accompanying nacelle, Slayton reported on Friday.
This progress comes shortly after a federal judge decided to let construction proceed amidst an ongoing legal challenge. Dominion is contesting a decision made by the Trump administration in December to halt the construction of five wind farms, citing classified national security risks involving radar interference. The administration had implemented a pause on leases for these projects late last year.
Republican lawmakers from Hampton Roads, including U.S. Reps. Jen Kiggans and Rob Wittman, are seeking further clarification from the Department of Defense and the Department of the Interior regarding the stop-work order. In a letter sent on January 22, they requested detailed information on the rationale behind the decision, including assessments of radar interference, environmental impacts, and national security considerations. “Transparency on these issues is essential to maintaining public confidence and ensuring our energy policies advance both economic growth and national security,” the lawmakers emphasized.
Virginia Democrats, including Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner and U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott, have voiced their opposition to the project’s pause.
Dominion’s plan involves the installation of 176 wind turbines situated 27 miles off the Virginia Beach coast. The ambitious project, which commenced in May 2024, is currently around 70% complete. Dominion estimates that the $11.2 billion endeavor will generate approximately 900 jobs and over $143 million in economic output annually during construction, along with 1,100 jobs and nearly $210 million in economic output each year once operational.
