Legendary Field Hockey Coach Christy Morgan Steps Down
Christy Morgan, renowned for her unparalleled achievements in field hockey, has announced her retirement due to health concerns. Morgan, who made history as the first individual to claim an NCAA field hockey title both as a player and as a coach, leaves behind a legacy of excellence.
A standout player for Old Dominion, Morgan clinched three national championships (1982, ’83, ’84) and was honored with the 1984 Honda Award. As a coach, she led James Madison University to victory in the 1994 NCAA championship, marking the university’s first title in any sport. Throughout her career, she guided the Dukes to 257 wins and five NCAA Tournament appearances.
CNU’s Caroline Hughlett Achieves Academic Excellence
Caroline Hughlett, a junior from Charlottesville, has been named Christopher Newport’s first National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Scholar Athlete of the Year. The award, given to the first-team All-American with the highest GPA, acknowledges Hughlett’s perfect 4.0 in accounting. Her on-field performance included seven goals and nine assists, contributing to CNU’s rise to the top of the polls and their NCAA Division III semifinals appearance.
Apprentice School Begins Baseball Season with Wins
The Apprentice School started its season with a doubleheader sweep against Mid-Atlantic Christian, winning 10-7 and 4-3 in a New South Athletic Conference matchup at War Memorial Stadium.
