Arkansas State’s Defense Overwhelms ODU Women in Sun Belt Showdown

Arkansas State Dominates with Relentless Defense Against Old Dominion

In an intense display of defensive prowess, Arkansas State overwhelmed the Old Dominion women’s basketball team, capitalizing on turnovers and poor shooting to secure a commanding win.

On Wednesday afternoon, at the First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Arkansas State’s aggressive defense proved too formidable for the Monarchs. Former ODU player Mimi McCollister made a significant impact off the bench, scoring 15 points as the Red Wolves forced Old Dominion into a staggering 29 turnovers and held them to 25% shooting. This effort led to an 84-55 victory in the Sun Belt conference.

ODU, with a record of 12-8 overall and 4-4 in the conference, saw its two-game winning streak snapped, causing them to fall to seventh place in the league standings. Meanwhile, Arkansas State, the reigning Sun Belt Tournament champions, improved to 17-4 overall and 8-1 in the conference, notching their third consecutive win and 15th out of the last 16 games.

“We turned the ball over at a very high rate within consecutive possessions,” said ODU head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones, as quoted by ODUsports.com. “This is something you can’t do against a very aggressive pressing team. We shot the ball poorly today from the 3-point line in the first three quarters. Too many mistakes against the reigning champs.”

Despite the loss, ODU’s En’Dya Buford shone by scoring 21 points, making her the only Monarch to hit double digits. She also contributed seven rebounds and six steals. Simaru Fields added nine points to the effort.

Arkansas State had a balanced attack with four players reaching double figures: Bella Weary with 12 points, Crislyn Rose with 11, and both Mia Tarver and Zyion Shannon contributing 10 points each.

Looking ahead, Old Dominion will face Texas State in their next game at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
