White Rock Dam is under continuous surveillance and maintenance by Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) staff, ensuring its optimal functioning year-round. The team’s routine activities include inspecting the dam’s embankment and spillway for any signs of erosion, debris, or vegetation challenges, maintaining the integrity of the concrete spillway and its mechanical components, and managing vegetation along the embankment to safeguard its stability. Additionally, DWU monitors internal water pressure through an instrument network to confirm the dam operates as intended. Regular checks encompass spillway inspections, water level monitoring, and structural maintenance that aids in lake management. It’s through these diligent efforts that DWU identified an unexpected drop in lake levels in early August.
Upon investigation, DWU staff discovered the absence of two stoplogs, which are crucial for maintaining lake levels. The Dallas Park and Recreation Department was promptly informed, and replacement stoplogs were installed the following day. This incident was not isolated, leading DWU to consider alternative solutions for more reliable spillway performance.
While replacing the stoplogs mitigates some of the water level drop, it isn’t sufficient to restore the lake to full capacity. The ongoing dry weather and high summer temperatures have led to evaporation surpassing the limited rainfall received. Consequently, residents should anticipate lower lake levels until more substantial rainfall occurs, a situation affecting numerous lakes across North Texas this summer. These conditions may impact recreational activities at the lake.
