Dallas Water Utilities Enhances Leak Detection and Reporting Efforts

As water resources become increasingly precious, managing water distribution systems efficiently has never been more critical. Dallas Water Utilities (DWU), a major provider in the region, faces the ongoing challenge of minimizing water loss across its extensive network serving over 2.6 million residents.

DWU operates one of the largest municipal water systems in the United States, overseeing a sprawling infrastructure of nearly 5,100 miles of water mains. These pipelines, varying in diameter from 0.75-inch to 108-inch, span a service area of around 700 square miles, supplying water to Dallas and 27 surrounding communities.

Annually, DWU conducts a water loss audit as mandated by the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB). This audit is crucial in pinpointing where and how much water is lost within their distribution channels. The latest audit reveals that the real water losses reached 10.36 billion gallons, a slight increase from the previous figure of 10.15 billion gallons in 2024.

In compliance with House Bill 29, DWU is now required to have third-party validation of its data, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of its reporting. Water loss in a system of this magnitude is inevitable due to several contributing factors, including increased demand, pressure fluctuations, shifting soils, temperature changes, aging infrastructure, and the daily wear and tear of moving water through pipelines.

To address these challenges, DWU has invested heavily in measures to curtail water loss. This includes an emphasis on leak detection, comprehensive condition assessments, and a robust pipeline replacement program. Each year, DWU replaces approximately 40 miles of water pipelines, having upgraded over 400 miles in the past decade. This proactive approach aims to mitigate leaks and enhance system reliability.

DWU’s Leak Detection Program employs cutting-edge technologies to spot non-surfacing leaks, ensuring a full system review every three years. Utilizing tools such as acoustic loggers, correlators, and inline detection equipment, the program can uncover hidden leaks in both large transmission mains and smaller distribution pipes.

Further bolstering their efforts, DWU plans to expand watermain repair resources with contracted services, complementing its in-house capabilities. Additionally, they are preparing a Water Loss Mitigation Plan for submission to the TWDB in spring 2027.

Customers are empowered to report water leaks through DWU’s enhanced reporting options. Reports can be made online via Dallas 311 online or through the Dallas 311 mobile application, available for iOS and Android devices.
