Discover Philadelphia’s Voice: Participate in the “To Be Free” Oral History Project
Philadelphia, a city rich in historical significance, is now calling on its residents to express their thoughts on a timeless question. This Spring, Dr. Guy Sims invites the community to share their voices at 11 libraries across the city, contributing to a unique oral history project.
Two and a half centuries ago, Philadelphia was at the forefront of revolutionary ideas about liberty. Today, the Free Library of Philadelphia seeks to capture the city’s current perspective on freedom through the “To Be Free” initiative. This project invites Philadelphians from all neighborhoods to visit their local library and respond to the question, “What does it mean to be free?”
Participants’ responses will be recorded and preserved as a time capsule, providing future generations with a glimpse into the thoughts and sentiments of today’s Philadelphia. The project encourages individuals of all ages to contribute; younger participants can also express their ideas through art on special coloring sheets, depicting their vision of freedom.
The “To Be Free” project is part of a larger effort by the Free Library to engage communities in meaningful discussions during the America250 celebrations. The library hosts hundreds of programs annually that focus on vital civic topics, aiming to reach every corner of Philadelphia.
